Start with food your dog or cat already eats and tolerates. A lick mat changes the serving surface; there is no need to introduce unfamiliar ingredients to create a new activity.
Three simple serving ideas
1. A thin, even layer
If your pet’s usual food can be spread, place a small amount in a thin layer across part of the textured surface. Keep the serving easy to reach for the first introduction.
2. A few separate patches
Spread the same familiar food over a few areas of the mat. Begin with accessible patches rather than filling every deep groove.
3. Part of the usual serving
Use a measured part of your pet’s normal food portion on the mat and serve the rest using the usual routine. Account for the mat serving when measuring the meal.
Use the selected mat as instructed
Check the dimensions and material of the option you choose. Where suction cups are included, follow the attachment instructions and confirm the surface is suitable. Do not assume freezer, microwave or dishwasher compatibility unless the listing confirms it.
Supervise and clean
A lick mat is not a chew toy. Supervise use, remove it if your pet begins chewing it, and clean food residue from the textured surface afterward. Inspect for damage before reusing.
